Whilst I recognize the ambient efforts of my dear country towards technological development, I still believe that Nigeria has a long way to go in the ICT sector, considering prevailing factors like the limited access to ICT infrastructure, including fixed and mobile telephony services ratio, Internet and broadband service penetration.  Truly, the noticeable gain from ICT always result to the increase in productivity which is enabled by easier and efficient communication, facilitated by increased access to telephone and then Internet.
No wonder, ICT had opened up access to the vast information resources available on the Internet, and we are therefore better empowered and now have better opportunity than before to get ourselves updated in various areas of endeavour especially via the Internet. There are indeed several other indications that considerable progress had been made in the information technology and telecoms sector since the advent of democracy in Nigeria, and the awareness of the potentials of using ICT to transform the nation‘s economy is already widespread among policy makers and leaders of the organized private sector.

Nigeria is, indeed, developing in the area of ICT but there are still some loopholes, which are affecting its total advancement in this area. According to an ITU report, the index used in selecting the top 154 countries advanced in ICT combined different factors as benchmarking tool globally, regionally and at the country level.  ”These are related to ICT access, use and skills, such as households with a computer as well as the number of Internet users; and literacy levels,” the body said.
The major challenge about this report in Nigeria is that the use of computer, access to Internet and other tools of ICT are limited greatly to the urban areas, and the challenges faced by the ICT sector in the country include particularly the fact that the people in the rural areas are yet to know how to use the computer and other ICT trends.
These challenges could be resolve in various ways, and basically, as I always believe, a good environment for the rapid growth of ICT in the rural area is very important; and the one and only essential and major player is the government both at the grassroots and federal level.

For me, I feel that the government should work on policies that affect the ICT sector; the cost of acquiring IT tools should be subsidized to encourage acquisition of such tools, even as more Public Private Partnership structures are cemented especially in the area of infrastructural development.
But then, ICT resources should be readily available to promote national development, create an enabling business environment and facilitate private sector (national and multinational) investments with government and private sector joint venture collaborations encouraged. There should be a special incentive programme to induce investment in the sector; there should equally be the need to promote legislations for the protection of online business transactions, to ensure adequate privacy security and privacy.

Technology today has become an important factor in the economic growth and development of countries. The greatest indicator is the formulation of relevant telecoms and IT policies, as well as the empowerment of an independent regulator for the sector.
Though the government has taken several steps to create an environment good enough to attract investment and ventures by entrepreneurs, a lot still need to be done to check the prevailing anomalies in terms of existing infrastructure.

Coding is one of the most important skills to have in the world right now, as it is the language that drives the digital universe. In the next twenty years, even jobs without a direct link to computing sciences, will require employees with a basic understanding of computing and coding.
Thanks to the internet and the awareness of the need to code, it is now easier and accessible to learn how to code. There are numerous ways your kids can be gainfully occupied over the summer holidays.

1. Buy them a personal computer

Although this might come across as pretty obvious, it is worth saying. Children need the opportunity to learn basic computer skills. And no, don’t share your own computer with them, buy them THEIR own PC. It’s called “personal computer” for a reason”. If you are are worried about the dangers awaiting your children on the internet, as you should rightfully be, there are several ways to ensure your children’s safety online.

2. Buy them a Raspberry Pi

For good measure, you should consider throwing in a Raspberry Pi kit. Raspberry Pis are credit card-sized computers that can be used to make really cool stuff, and learn programming languages like Scratch and Python.
What really makes them great is that not only are they cheap, they are designed to be intentionally easy to programme so that kids can learn and build cool things with themRaspberry Pis are available for sale in Nigeria.

3. Enroll them in a summer coding programme

summer-of-code-banner-white
Increasingly, there are many initiatives in Nigeria that are teaching children to codeCcHUB Nigeriais organising a four week summer programme in Lagos as part of their initiatives to raise a new generation of digital makers. Tech Quest also has a summer camp programme in several major cities in Nigeria this year.
Not all of these are free, as you will see, but even where you have to pay, it will be money well spent.

4. Invest in games

kids gaming
Games are an awesome way to engage kids in learning a new skill largely because using games as a learning aid is fun and doesn’t feel like a chore.
For younger children, LightbotCode Monkey IslandRobozzleRobot Turtles, and Kodable are good options to introduce them to the world of  programming.
SpaceChemCodeCombatCodemancer and Machineers provide gaming experiences that are more suited to older children and teenagers. Like we say in Nigeria, “not everytime” Soccer or Car Racing…

5. Online Learning Resources

code.org
One can learn virtually everything on the internet, including coding, obviously. There are several online learning resources with varying levels of learning involvement and complexity.
Code.org is uniquely suited to kids because it was actually created to get coding into the mainstream student curriculum. The site provides basic programming lessons and also offers a gamified approach, as it can be linked with gaming applications and other online resources such as TynkerScratch and Khan Academy.
If your child is already a programming whiz or prefers a more traditional learning experience,Coursera and Codecademy offer more advanced, structured and formal approaches to learning programming languages.

It’s been one year Uber began its operations in Lagos.
To celebrate this milestone, the e-hailing service is offering free rides this Saturday, 25th July 2015.
The free ride is open to everyone, both new sign ups and existing users, for rides up to the tune of NGN2000. Uber says the promotion will run all day, starting from 12:00 am.
There’s however a limit of two rides per person.

I just loved to browse new stuff but unfortunately I was not having internet connection at my home so I used to go to a cyber café to browse internet. But I faced that timer running problem that beeped as soon as my half an hour was done, so it was like a hell to me, because my ideas were big but pockets were small, so now when by GOD's grace everything is OK I found this amazing trick that could help bypass the timer restriction in any cyber café where it is implemented.

Trick to Bypass Timer Restriction in Cyber Café

So the Process Explorer is that application that Suspend few running applications and can resume it instantly if you want too, so we will be using it to do this JOB.

process explorer
  1. After you have downloaded the process explorer.
  2. Open it up on the cyber café system you are using.
  3. Now you need to search for two running processes “Client.exe” and “Guardit.exe”, as these two are responsible for running that timer.
  4. Now just right on both of them and choose Suspend.
  5. This terminates the process and hence your timer will be stopped, and you can browse internet without restriction.
  6. After some good time surfing, if you wanna re-enable the timer, you can simply right click once again and choose Resume to start those process again, hence your timer will be started again.

Android phones are powerful, useful, cool and very interesting devices which makes you addicted to the phone. Most of the android smartphone users have one big issue: “battery backup”. You don’t need to change the device because it drains out quickly instead we will you tips about how to improve the battery life of your android smartphone?
maximize android battery, boost android battery life
Maximize or boost android phone battery life
Instructions:
1.  Use android’s built in battery usage screen: Check whats exactly eating up your android phone’s battery the most. Go to Settings > About Phone > Battery UseFrom this screen you can understand what to turn off in your phone settings to save battery.
2. Adjust the brightness: Big bright screens are great to look at but they eat up the maximum amount of your android’s battery. To adjust the brightness go to Settings > Display > Brightness. Either you can select the auto brightness option if available or adjust it manually.
3. Disable Wi-Fi: We know browsing on wifi is much faster than browsing on mobile data plan. Make sure you turn off the wifi when you aren’t using it because if the wifi is on your phone will keep on scanning for available networks. Go to Settings > Wireless and network settings> Wifi settings > Turn Off Wifi. (or simply turn off the wifi from the notification area)
4. Disable Bluetooth: Disable Bluetooth whenever you are not using it. It saves a lot of battery as well as keeps your smartphone save too. Go to Settings > Wireless and network settings>Bluetooth settings> Turn of Bluetooth. (or simply turn off the Bluetooth from the notification area)
5. Disable GPS: Disable GPS and Latitude when you are not using it. GPS is a very powerful service but it drains the battery pretty fast. Use GPS only when you need it. Go to Settings> Location and Security Settings> Remove check from “Use GPS Satellites”. (or simply turn off the GPS from the notification area)
Note: You can use the “Power Widget” to easily toggle GPS, Bluetooth, Wifi and Screen Brightness.

6. Disable automatic sync: Many applications like Gmail, facebook, twitter and other email apps eat up a lot of battery due to automatic sync features. Background data is also required to get the e-mails and updates at regular intervals. The best settings you can make is to keep the background data on and automatic sync feature turned off. Go to Settings> Accounts and Sync> Remove check mark from “Auto-sync”.
7. Disable or remove the apps that you don’t use:  There are many apps which we have installed and we never use them. Make sure you remove such apps because many of those apps keep running at the background. This will help you in freeing up internal phone memory as well as save battery.
8. Disable home screen widgets and live wallpaper:  Home screen widgets always make the apps running at the background. So make sure you keep only those widgets that you generally use. Live wallpaper is sure an eye candy and makes your smartphone home screen look beautiful, but it makes the battery backup half of what you would normally get if you use an image as wallpaper. So don’t use live wallpaper and use minimum widgets.

9. Use a good task killer: I would suggest you to use the inbuilt Task Killer app of your android smartphone because it has been designed according to your phone. If you want you can also grab a good task killer from android market and make sure you use it according to the instructions given. If used properly task killers can do wonders for your smartphone.
10. Use battery saving apps: There are many applications that aim to improve your battery performance. The majority of these restrict internet use and can be customized according to your needs. One of the best app for this purpose is “Juice Defender” available in both paid and free versions in android market.  “Juice Defender” lets you configure a bunch of parameters to govern your phone’s power usage. You could set android to automatically switch off data services during the night, for example, or to only enable synchronization when your screen is actually on.

iROKOtv-Android-app
In what appears to, largely, be an experiment of sorts, iROKOtv is on the verge of killing off its streaming service in Africa and focus on a mobile download experience for the continent’s movie subscribers.
According to CEO Jason Njoku on his Tumblr blog, the company will, starting from July 2015, discontinue its website and streaming service in Africa, although several thousands of its existing African-based subscribers will continue to have access to the site, while new users will be unable to experience the movies on their desktops.
In a move that will retire the company’s .com presence, at least for African consumers, it could open up a whole new experience for iROKOtv’s subscribers in Africa, allowing them to discover and download movies via its Android app to watch offline, thereby making iROKOtv a movie discovery and download app, instead of its online movie streaming service mantra which it launched at the back of.
As more and more online movie streaming services are launching in Africa every month, I think it’s a good way for iROKOtv to differentiate itself along the way to becoming the Internet TV platform of choice for African entertainment.
However, this could all be an experiment that could be reversed back as quickly as it was started, especially if users begin complaining about their inability to use the service due to app crashes, etc. For example, its current Android app screams buggy and force closes each time I tap on the Movies tab or try to do something else and eventually signs me out, so I’m hoping this doesn’t happen when the app has been optimized for downloads.
Remember when in 2012 the company was criticised for launching a buggy and slow music streaming service, especially as experienced with its mobile apps.
After what appeared to be a hasty launch of a flurry of iROKING mobile apps on AndroidiOS, Symbian and Windows Phone devices which were in most cases buggy, the company later got its groove back with a easy to use mobile site that allowed users to download tracks on the go.
Still, the move could be in response to an earlier experiment with movie downloads for offline viewing launched early this year, which has apparently caught on very well, and perhaps paved the way for the company’s new direction. Yeah, I signed up as an iROKOtv user for the first time ever, right after the movie download feature launched in March this year.
So iROKOtv could be up to something good here. Besides, Africa has been described as a mobile-only continent, and Njoku notes that 76% of iROKOtv’s users are via mobile internet.
“If Nigerian Internet is mobile, the Internet TV company which wins needs to go mobile,” he stated.
That’s why iROKOtv is rethinking its strategy to build content, pricing, access, product development, distribution, etc around mobile and the operating system that matters most in Africa and Nigeria: Android.
But, as Njoku noted, it will also mean resetting and relearning new perspectives within iROKO, since its existing competencies, infrastructure and team are desktop in nature.
Paga agent
It was just about a year ago that local payment startup, Paga reached 2 million registered users with over 11 million transactions processed amounting to over 120 billion Naira (US$ 750 million) as at June 2014.
Today, the service has crossed the 3 million registered user mark, with over 8,000 agents and 3,000 merchants, almost doubling its figures as of last June. It reached the 1 million mark in November 2013.
Paga, which commercially launched back in September 2011, says over a million new people used Paga to carry out transactions in the year 2014 and further processed 6.6 million transactions worth N69 billion during the past year.
However, the payment startup may still be seeing low figures in terms of monthly active users (MAUs) with the last official figure we reported was less than 350,000 MAUs, according to CEO, Tayo Oviosu, which as at November 2013 was 33% of its over 1 million users.
Paga_webpage_3million_users
Fast forward to June 2015, about 18 months later, assuming that, say 35% of its current total registered users (3,000,000) are actively using the service monthly to pay bills, transfer funds and buy phone credits, it means that Paga would have crossed over 1 million monthly active users.
Although these are mere conjecture, there are indications that given the growth of the platform in the past year, one can argue that reaching 1 million active users is a milestone long overdue. Yet, the startup still has a long way to go to reach its goals.
Paga has since set a target to reach 15 million active users and 30,000 agents by 2015, but it does appear that it would take a very long while (perhaps in a decade) before reaching this target, even as it may likely not reach our prediction of 2 million active users by 2015 year-end.
